Beta Sigma Awards Homes to the Needy

Beta Sigma Fraternity awarded new homes to the needy families of Hagonoy, Davao del Sur. The Beta Sigma Village also hosted regular medical missions by dedicated Beta Sigma volunteers and will continue to help and build for the betterment of our society.

BETA SIGMA - GK VILLAGE GROUNDBREAKING

Beta Sigma - GK Village Project officially broke ground on March 8, 2008 in Hagonoy, Davao del Sur.  This $60K project aims to build 30 single family homes and provide a supportive, self-sufficient environment to a neglected, but high-need population.

Led by Western USA GP Jet Salas, the groundbreaking ceremony was attended by Gawad Kalinga Founder Tony Meloto and other Beta Sigma leaders from various chapters and assemblies including Dario Sabularse (UP Alumni), Sam Strong (National Assembly), Sonny Pagador (Federation of Beta Sigma Fraternity Chapters in North America), and Frank Mamaril (UP Southern California).  Mayor Franco Magno Calida of Hagonoy, Secretary Jesus Dureza (Presidential Adviser on Peace Process), GK Coordinator Roel Habaradas, and other local officials also graced the occasion.  Several resident brothers and elders from all over the Philippines and abroad attended as well in support of the project. In addition to the ceremony, guests enjoyed song and dance numbers from the Sigma Beta Sorority, grade school students, and local residents.

The Davao Brothers conducted a medical and dental mission within the site of the village in Barangay Guihing few days before the ceremony.

"This laudable project that Beta Sigma Western USA launched and carried out is indeed a big leap for all of us," said Rudy A. Luceñada MSU75B. "We are in the forefront in shaping the Philippine landscape. Once again, we have shown the whole world that we have exceeded any one’s expectations of our fraternity."

Beta Sigma Fraternity is the first Philippine-based fraternity to embark this kind of project. It is a fine example of the fraternity's commitment to giving back to the community. Helping to change a family's life and doing something good to the society make this effort very special and rewarding.
